  Representative Pat Garofalo (R- Farmington, MN) accuses Education Minnesota of lying it its TV ads and says it's leader Tom Dooher should "run and hide". Education Minnesota's ads say a change that Garofalo wanted to make in state teaching requirements would lower the standards for Minnesota teachers. Education Minnesota stands by the ads and does not expect an apology from Representative Garofalo

Representative Jim Abeler talks about the MA (Medicare Assistance) provision that the Minnesota House is about to vote on: "I want to remind you who is going to get into this program. And this follows a national plan that was adopted this year with great duress at the federal level. And there is no asset limit. And there is no residency requirement. And so that means the person moves in with a whole basement full of gold bullion or a nice boat or a car and they're going to get medical assistance and you're going to pay half of it. The expect that 20 thousand people will sign up and I think it's going to be more. And some people dodge their...they don't pay ah...they work for cash. And they're going to get in and the money we're going to be putting toward their coverage." Representative Paul Thissen responds.

Twins Stadium & Education Funding

What does the new Twins stadium have to do with education funding? Plenty says Representative Ann Lenczewski. The Twins stadium was funded through a sales tax in Hennepin county. There was no local referendum on the sales tax because the legislature made an exemption for the Twins stadium because it was needed. Representative Lenczeweski argues the same exemption should be made for school levies because schools need the money.

MN GOP Fails To Water Down Campaign Finance Law

05/16/2010
Representative Paul Kohls (R-Victoria, MN) attempts to change a reporting requirement in the campaign finance bill that would have allowed businesses to spend up to $1,000 without reporting it. The proposed limit in the bill is $100. Minnesota is revising its campaign finance laws because of the recent US Supreme Court decision that allows businesses to spend on campaign ads as long as they are not coordinating with a candidate or a party. Kohls' amendment was defeated on a voice vote.

A standing ovation from the Minnesota House draws tears from Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher. Sunday is the last day for the legislature to pass bills and Anderson Kelliher is not running for reelection in the House. She is the DFL endorsed candidate for Governor.

Sertich To Gov & GOP: What else can we do?

Around 5 AM Sunday Minnesota House Majority Leader Tony Sertich urges Republican members to vote for the budget bill that contains "90 plus percent of what the Governor wants". The bill passed without Republican support and was vetoed this morning by Governor Pawlenty.
